Tulear itself is the name of the city in South West Madagascar. Combined with ‘Coton,’ which means “Cotton,” the breed is practically named “The cotton of Tulear.”

The origin story of Coton de Tulear remains a fascinating tale, even today. People believe that Tulear’s ancestors, Coton de la Reunion, were pure-bred from Reunion Island, 420 miles away from Madagascar.

It is still unclear how the ancestors of Cotons find their way to Madagascar. However, evidence shows that they swim across the Malagasy Channel, all the way to Tulear, and set their nest there. Even more amazingly, people are sure they did it by following shipwrecks.

Always a dog lover, Jane Fonda adopted a Coton de Tulear from a breeder in Montreal. She decided to take a practical approach to dog-naming and name the dog Tulea.
